She went into septic shock and incurred brain damage, and we spent an unexpected two months with her fighting for her life in the hospital. These were the verses that meant most to me as I clung to hope in Christ. It had been a long, brutal journey through the valley of the shadow of death, but He had brought me through it. On this side, it has opened up to hope + light + freedom. I needed to put my faith in the Creator of the universe, the creator of every cell and atom, the one who has all authority. It was a lifeline, because Evangeline was too heavy. But if Jesus had carried our sorrows on the cross, this was included. So I grabbed a sticky note + wrote: Surely He has borne THIS grief and carried THIS sorrow. It became my mantra, clutched to my chest, whispered at every pain. I chewed on it, swallowed it into heart + mind, digested it into soul-medicine, and knew it as my savior. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen news of brain damage crushed me: He has borne this grief. When her 6th spinal tap failed: He has carried this sorrow. When her PICC line broke: He has borne this grief. When Junie screamed for mama to come home: He has carried this sorrow. Over \u0026amp; over, I faced a great pain, but I didn’t hold it. Jesus had already borne it, and I gave it to Him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd one day I realized…here was Jesus. I had been searching for Him, expecting to find Him with healing + light. But who I found was the man of sorrows, and He didn’t meet me with an apologetic about suffering; He met me with Himself. But when I opened it in my Bible, I fixated on a line I’d never paid attention to before: the Lord would carry us as a man carries his son. Immediate tears dropped on the page as a specific photograph came to mind: my husband, Dan, holding my son, Cassius, when he was a year old, Dan's strength + size + character providing every ounce of assurance Cassius could need. How was God going to fight for us? How was He going to carry me through this tragedy? As a man carries his son. As Dan would carry Cassius: with tenderness engulfed in strength, with arms that are everlasting, with a firm grip on heart + mind when both threaten to cave.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Lord fought for me, yes, as a warrior, but moreso, as a father.
