His Law Is Love, His Gospel Is Peace | O Holy Night Christian Art Print

I’ve sung this my whole life, and every year the words become more profound:

“His law is love, and His gospel is peace. Chains He shall break, for the slave is our brother, and in His name, all oppression shall cease.”

These are not soft words. They are a declaration about a King, a law, and the rescue of captives. These are words about racial reconciliation, about fighting for freedom, about chains breaking and oppression ending.

And we sing them at Christmas.

We sing them because this is what the arrival of Jesus means. God entered our broken world and came near to the poor, the foreigner, the outcast, and the oppressed. He proclaimed good news to the poor and freedom for the captive. He gave us a kingdom where the law is love, the gospel is peace, and the person the world calls other is our brother.

Christmas is not only the story of a baby in a manger. It is the arrival of a King.

A King who comes near.

May we be people who do the same.
