The Lord’s Prayer | Matthew 6:9–13 Scripture Art Print

“Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us” (Matthew 6:12)

The Lord's prayer is one of the first chunks of Scripture that most of us memorize. And this last year of my life has made one line come alive, convicting and shaping my worldview:

"Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who have trespassed against us."

Right now, all of our news headlines are about borders and illegals. And while policy is profoundly complicated to navigate, mercy is not. Because what is the truest reason Christians must lead the charge on loving the foreigner? What is the truest reason we must act with holy and righteous compassion? 

Because we know that we, too, have crossed a border.

All of us have crossed the illegal border from righteousness into unrighteousness. None of us stands before God with clean hands or perfect papers. We have been caught, desperate for mercy. And in Christ, instead of receiving what we deserve, we are welcomed into a kingdom we could never earn our way into. We are forgiven, made not only into citizens, but into sons and daughters.

And then Jesus teaches us to pray: as we forgive those who trespass against us.

We have been shown mercy. May we be the people who show it.
