I painted this the week that George Floyd was murdered, grieving over the brutal, systemic racism that kills, separates, and traumatizes our nation. Proverbs 31 is often used as the description of the perfect wife, and yet here this is, a verse we often overlook. It brought me so much conviction. Because up until now, when something like this has happened, my response has been two things: check in with my black friends and post on social media. It’s just not enough. Yes, it’s time to post our sadness, but it’s also time to do more. To put our money where our mouth is, to let anger turn into phone calls, to have hard conversations with our friends. It’s time to speak up for those who are crushed, to run alongside them and see that they get justice.
